Germany Launches GaN-on-Si MicroLED Collaborative R&D Project to Drive Breakthroughs in Next-Generation Display Technology

Recently, Germany launched an important collaborative R&D project aimed at advancing the development and manufacturing of silicon-based gallium nitride (GaN) microLED display technology. Initiated by multiple research institutions and companies, the project focuses on enhancing the application potential of MicroLED in the display industry, marking a key step for Europe in the next-generation display technology field.

The project is led by the Fraunhofer Institute, with participation from various partners including semiconductor equipment manufacturers, material suppliers, and display technology companies. The goal is to optimize the epitaxial growth process of GaN-on-Si (gallium nitride on silicon substrates), improve the light-emitting efficiency and reliability of MicroLEDs, and achieve mass production of high-density, small-sized microdisplay devices. According to the project leader, the team has successfully achieved a MicroLED array with 10-micron pixel size in a laboratory environment, laying the foundation for future high-end applications such as wearable devices and AR/VR headsets.

With the continuous maturation of Mini-LED and MicroLED technologies, the market demand for high-brightness, low-power, long-life display solutions continues to grow. GaN-on-Si technology, due to its high compatibility with existing silicon-based semiconductor processes, is considered one of the key pathways for achieving large-scale production of MicroLEDs. This project not only accelerates the commercialization of this technology but also brings new development opportunities to the global display supply chain.

Under this trend, leading domestic LED solution provider Goprol LED is actively building up its MicroLED-related technologies. With deep expertise in LED packaging, driving control, and optical design, the company has launched multiple Mini/MicroLED products suitable for high-end display applications. Its independently developed high-precision solid-state packaging technology effectively enhances product stability and consistency, providing reliable technical support and product choices for the industry.

Overall, Germany's newly launched GaN-on-Si MicroLED collaborative project represents an important milestone in technological breakthroughs and injects new momentum into the global LED industry's innovation and development. In the future, with the participation of more companies and research institutions, MicroLED technology is expected to be implemented and popularized in a broader range of application scenarios.
