Recently, the Computer History Museum in the United States announced that it successfully rescued a collection of precious computer history artifacts from an abandoned warehouse in Germany. The collection consists of more than 2,000 items, covering various devices and materials from the 1930s to the 1980s. After facing a bomb threat during World War II, these artifacts were eventually safely relocated and have now become an important resource for global technological history research.
This artifact recovery operation began last year when the museum team discovered an abandoned warehouse in a German region that had been neglected for many years. Inside, there were large quantities of early computer hardware, software documentation, and technical manuals. Due to the area's historical significance as an industrial zone during World War II, certain parts of the warehouse posed unexploded ordnance risks, requiring the entire relocation process to be conducted with the assistance of professional bomb disposal experts. Ultimately, these artifacts were transported to the United States by seven heavy-duty trailers, marking the re-emergence of a forgotten chapter in the history of computer development into public awareness.
The collection includes early mechanical computing devices, vacuum tube computers, and transistor-based equipment, as well as numerous computer systems used for scientific research, military purposes, and commercial applications. Among them are rare models that hold significant value for understanding the evolution of computer technology.
